no idea if this sketch makes sense. But there is 'above ground' at the top, and her under the tree, opening a doorway/path into another forest.

stilt walker

AAAAAAAAAAAAH! IT WORKS! *Squeals in delight*

Had scraped the painting I was trying to do for the Stilt walker, and was teaing the backside using the usual process (enough tea it goes under the paper, soaks all the way through)

and I just flipped over the paper to give the blank new working surface some texture and the stilt walking painting I'd started WORKS

pictures will be edited in if they come out *eating right now*

So... I've been doing digging around in Pandora.com yesterday... and now this morning, but I keep going back to Natalie Walker.

Such, yummy, yummy goodness...

I keep asking for Carol of the Bells, but they're being silly and skipping the song *SIIIGH*

I don't know how she'll develope, but we'll see, eh?

...really should work on this one:

edit// HALF HOUR later... I finally get me some Carol of the Bells... bluegrass style. Win.

Over the bridge and far away...

Sometimes, my older ideas evolve with time. I know it's been taking me forever to get the stilt walker done, but she hasn't quite sat right with me. (goddess of rain took me 2 years before she was completed) Sometimes my pieces do what I wish I could do to myself -- alter, erase, redraw lines where I really wish they would fall...

I also rarely work from one source of inspiration, though this time around, after fiddling with poses, etc, I keep falling back to the original. The long legs, the slow sweeping walk, and I see a lot of green (...as usual)

Remember my Forest Goddess? She was inspired by a hill on my way home from work (...when I had a job). Recently, humans have plundered that hill, destroying what had been there all for the sake of expansion. It's a horrible spot for a building, and there used to be such wonderful mornings with fog coiling around the slender trunks. All gone, toppled over.

I should go drive out there with the camera, park in the graveyard's lot and go take a few pictures before it's all gone. I should've taken a picture of this ent tree near by, because now it's fallen over, thanks to a few bad summer/fall storms we had had this year.

I was bitching to my friend (Who thankfully wasn't paying attention...) that my art is just women and trees. So I was struggling to do something different, forcing myself to try something new, where as... this piece HAS to be a woman/creature and trees. There's nothing else she can be, but just the pose was lacking in that glimpse of a story for someone else to latch onto.

After fiddling around with trying to nail a pose, I went back to the original profile view of her walking along, though altered it slightly so she's climbing stairs. A bridge it became, a place for the child me to hide under and watch this creature pass, creating as she walks overhead. This drawing has been giving me a headache, truthfully, and I really want her out and painted, but I also do not want to muck it up, and rushing will do that.

She's become something inspired as well by a dream I had when I was half falling asleep, a goddess of vines and leaves, gracefully walking a staircase, and I had tried a few times to capture her as well. But, I think I'm getting somewhere, finally... Who knows when she'll be done, if this'll become my first painting for 2008. I've drawn this goddess a few times, I think she's the highest up, the life giver...

Give thanks to the power of Dr. Pepper for the length of this post of random nonsense *g*

PILE OF SKETCHES )

It helps me sometimes to talk about what I'm trying to do, instead of just thinking it, I spew it out and force you all to see it too >_>

Maelstrom - WIP book cover

might not make sense:

I'm thinking some sort of crossroads with the sea in one direction and a great city in the other, with stone monoliths as sign posts and a bunch of people hiking down the road. Maybe some other elements scattered here and there - like an alien race (they are described in a single chapter), a skyship overhead in the distance, and a cloud-front coming in, carrying the great storm that is the Maelstrom

Echo in the Mere - WIP painting

Going to see if I can just use watercolors for this (maybe some gouache for pulling some light back in)

so far... it was underpaint of yellow & ochre... then darker blues... then the background trees and leaves. Yellow between the background branches. Then took the same blue (indigo) and mixed it with a new green color for the main tree.

Wide Images In here )

Been stabbing at this all day, couldn't figure out what pose to go with, so I threw it at my friend and liked the reasonings for why he went with this one:

She looks more supple there, more at ease and questing. was what caught my attention the most... bolded the important word.

I've been struggling with this one very badly. I've complete and utter control over how this image'll turn out (since he doesn't want to see it and told me to go with what i want, as long as it's the opening scene) and I really wanted to push myself to get to my next 'level'. Then about 45 minutes ago, I realized that what my problem was with this was that I was trying to make it not MY work. I was going to try and do something so utterly and completely different, ignoring the image in my head (a shadow of an image really...) that it was driving me nuts. So I went and played katamari after having some dinner, while matt took a nap.

Skimmed over the email conversations I've been having and this bit stuck out in the latest one: Well, I definitely wanted to pick a piece that I thought would fit your style, otherwise what would be the point? I'm glad it connected with you in some way.

For some stupid reason, I didn't want to draw a girl and some trees, because that's what I always draw. Completely forgetting that THAT was what this piece is supposed to be! I think I was attempting to abstract my work, but it's not going to work, at least not with this piece.

I'm going to move it to big paper tomorrow, and I'll try to remember to take progress shots along the way. If I don't, I'll get stuck again and won't get moving on this painting for yet another week.
